His unwavering commitment to this tiny creature's well-being didn't go unnoticed – in fact, the rescuers were so impressed that they named the baby bat 'Little Wayne' in honor of his big-hearted protector.
Little Wayne is now thriving under the expert care at the Joey and Bat Sanctuary (JABS), where the team is deeply grateful to Big Wayne for his quick thinking and compassion. Julia, a dedicated caregiver at JABS, shared with The Dodo that the baby arrived 'cool and quiet, and rather dehydrated.' She explained that the mother and baby might have been perched on power lines for a day or two before fierce winds knocked them down – a common risk for flying foxes, which are large bats that roost in trees or on utility lines and play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal in ecosystems.
Today, Little Wayne is doing wonderfully, enjoying a special formula tailored to his needs, along with comforting items like a teddy bear and pacifier to mimic the warmth of his mother. He'll remain in the sanctuary's nurturing environment until he's strong enough and skilled enough to be released back into the wild, where he can contribute to nature's balance once more.
