Candace Cameron Bure avoids scary movies because they can be 'a portal' to something 'demonic' (2025)

They say that TV rots your brain, but Candace Cameron Bure is worried about your soul.

"In our house as a mom, I feel like you guys make fun of me when I talk about — they make fun of me all the time — but particularly when I'm serious about a spiritual thing happening, and then they're rolling their eyes at me. Like the portal," the former Full House star and current Hallmark Channel mainstay said of the potentially malevolent properties of the broadcast format on Tuesday's episode of The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.

Speaking with her son, Lev Valerievich Bure, and Texas-based pastor Jonathan Pokluda. Bure said her kids — Lev, daughter Natasha Valerievna Bure, son Maksim Valerievich Bure — and her hockey player husband "laugh at me because of the portal. I'm like, 'You're opening up a portal.'"

What portal, exactly?

"Like if you're watching this, or you're playing this video game, or whatever, that's a portal that could let stuff inside our home," she explained. "I don't even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that's just a portal."

The irony of Bure's lifelong profession was not lost on her. The Los Angeles-born actress, 49, has been appearing on films and television series since she landed a role on St. Elsewhere at 6 years old. She's since gone on to play D.J. Tanner on the full series run of Full House, star in numerous films for the Hallmark Channel, and appear on other classic ʼ90s series like Boy Meets World, on which she played a Satan-worshipping witch.

"Listen, I'm in the film industry," she leveled with her cohosts and listeners. "I understand how it all works. I know that movie has a crew of 200 people, and they're lighting it, and they're adding the sound effects, and it's makeup, and the camera people, and actors; however, there's still something that can be incredibly demonic while they've made it."

Bure became a devout Christian at the age of 12 and has remained outspoken about her religious beliefs and conservative political opinions. The actress has found herself in hot water in the past over her views on subjects like LGBTQ rights, but remains candid about her faith on her podcast.

She even worried that about purchasing products with names that evoke the same feelings as scary movies, like the canned water brand Liquid Death.

"That just reminded me like you posted something a while back about Liquid Death," she told Pokluda. "You're like, 'Do you want to buy a product that is literally being cursed as it's going out into distribution?'"

For fans who share Bure's concerns about TV's spiritually conductive potential, fear not: The actress' next film, Home Sweet Christmas Wedding, is sure to be fear-free.
